Woodblock-Printed Books that Inspired Hiroshige’s Series
During the 17th–19th centuries, constant traffic between Edo City, the new capital in eastern Japan, and Kyoto City, the former capital in western Japan, led to the development of a burgeoning travel industry. Displayed here are three famous travel guides that undoubtedly influenced both the theme and style of Hiroshige’s print series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (Meisho Edo hyakkei, 1856–59).
